it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kindergarten class is in the NYC (Special Ed) District 75. My students are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Most are on the severe end of the spectrum not having language, in diapers, and in need of constant support.
Most of my students spent their prekindergarten years learning remotely, which is very difficult for 4-year-olds—especially those with a diagnosis of autism
Developing fine motor skills is a critical skill in the development of an autistic child. During Covid, my students had no hands-on practice to develop this essential skill. They need to develop and practice to perform these essential skills they have been taught so they may work on becoming more independent.
My Project
My autistic students spent their pre-kindergarten remotely.
During Covid and learning virtual, they never cut, glued, painted, used foam sand, used stamps, wrote letters in shaving cream, or did a "live" morning meeting.
These activities help my 6:1:1 class develop their fine motor skills. Since we do these projects as a group, it also develops social skills, the ability to follow directions, and a sense of accomplishment when their project is finished and hanging up in the classroom.
I want to give them this opportunity to develop these important skills that are essential to their success.
