My Project
Students thrive on having choices and options. One way that students do this in my class is through their creative expression in their reading and writing journals. Students catalogue their experience with reading by hand and creatively; to replicate the habits of real life readers. Students also have the opportunity of acting as professional writers, because they are given the space to write creatively and without judgement. Students will use all of the materials craft a reader and writer journal that will be useful to their learning and personal to themselves.
Students must be given the time, materials, and assistance to creatively express their ideas into writing; by creating a personal journal, students will be able to do that.
These journals also help students sharpen their physical writing skills which has been scientifically proven to engage a variety of fine motor skills and help students with word recognition---this word recognition also impacts their comprehension of reading materials as they age.
In my class students will have the unique experience of writing for 10 minutes by hand daily. This enables them to develop fast creation and brainstorming skills (which will be beneficial as they age into the workforce). It also solidifies the importance of written explanation and expression, which students and adults use in their everyday life.
