Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in a school that is filled with diversity and hope. Students are still learning to understand themselves and others. Students continue to discover approaches to learning that yield successful outcomes. Students are participating in extended learning opportunities to increase learning outcomes. Attendance is a challenge in the midst of the pandemic and some are doing exceptionally well. Our school is a Title I school wherein more than 80% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch and more than 50% of the student population are English language learners (first language is not English). The school is located in an area that has its challenges with combating violence and gang activity. Regardless of their situations and circumstances, our students continue to be open-minded and resilient as they move forward in the midst of challenging times.

My Project

Critical and creative thinking are skills that I engage my students in when solving problems. During the "Week of Code" I realize how much my students enjoy coding. Computer Science is an area that I would like to increase student interests and engagement. Coding aligns perfectly when teaching students not only the step by step process but the incorporation of the "IF/THEN" statement.

I would like to capitalize on the love and structure of coding to help them develop problem solving apps.

This methodology allows me to use the interest to encourage critical and creative thinking. This would be done by purchasing tablets to create, run, and test the apps for validity. Students learn through various levels of complexity and rigor.

This would be a platform that would allow them to apply their thinking skills.

The students will be able to reflect and debug errors in coding. I would like to engage them in creating the very technology apps that they use everyday. In doing so, they will see that they, too, can do the things that most feel are beyond his/her abilities.
