Cracking the Code of Written Language to Boost Mental Health

Help me give my students materials like the set of dry erase lapboards, magnetic wands with chips, the Spelligator, and more to promote phonemic awareness and phonics activities.

My Project

Cognitive psychology and neuroscience research have long shown that good readers look to the letters in words to identify what words say. Furthermore, research has demonstrated that instructing students on cracking the code of written language is one of the most effective ways to get them to read words. Students' mental health is also impacted when they struggle with learning to read.

This project's materials will allow me to better align the curriculum to reading research.

These materials will allow me to provide the necessary multisensory learning opportunities from the impacts of interrupted learning resulting from COVID-19. The most common reason children struggle in word-level reading is a phonological core deficit.

During whole group lessons, the lined dry erase lapboards, felt erasers, and dry erase markers will allow students to practice forming letters accurately to build their handwriting fluency, spelling regular and irregular words, and writing sentences to put it all together. Using dry erase lapboards will also provide immediate, corrective feedback. In addition, the decodable books will allow students connected text to practice reading the phonics skills while promoting fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension development.

The reusable dry erase pocket sleeves will allow me to routinely change out monthly themed Elkonin boxes or sound boxes that promote advanced phonemic awareness activities and phonological long-term memory. Elkonin boxes also promote orthographic mapping and the alphabetic principle. The red heart gems will be used when teaching heart words (irregular words in which students learn that one or more parts don't follow the typical letter-sound correspondences like the ai in said makes the short e sound).

During independent center time, the phonemic awareness and phonics games, word cards, letter tiles, and the wands with the chips will promote foundational reading skills. The cart will help keep it all organized!
