This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My young multilingual learners from Kindergarten to 2nd grade inspire me every day with their energy, diligence, and resilience. They are working hard to learn English and at the same time, tackle classroom content. Learning to read and spell- understanding phonics rules- is hard work, especially in English! Many words in English don't follow simple spelling rules. My kids are reminded of this every time they try to spell the word "eight", or when they discover that " trout" and "soup" are spelled with the same ou vowel team but are pronounced differently. This is where extra practice with "decodable texts" comes into play. Are you old enough to remember learning to read with "Dick and Jane" books? ( I am!) These are an early example of controlled, decodable text.

Decodable texts are a tool designed to help teach beginning readers phonic decoding.

They are helpful for all ages! Decodable texts are written specifically to ensure that the majority of words are phonetically regular, meaning that they are able to be sounded out by applying letter-sound relationships that students have been taught. The words are controlled- meaning, the text contains only words that students have been exposed to. Beginners need to understand the internal structure of words and pay attention to the letter-sound relationships and patterns in order to recognize and decode unknown words accurately and independently. Decodable texts are an excellent tool to provide intentional and frequent practice opportunities for students as they apply their new phonics knowledge to connected text to build automatic word reading. When kids experience success reading books, they build skills along with their confidence to keep on reading. This set of decodable books from chargemommybooks.com. will support me in teaching small group reading. They are high quality, engaging, and exactly what my students need!
