My students need sticks, cotton balls, bags, other items & a mini GoPro cam. Students will build a protective barrier around an egg to demonstrate how NASA's Curiosity landed on Mars and video the action!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Arntson's classroom raised $377

My Students
Our school is the most diverse elementary school in the district with more than 550+ students attending pre-school to sixth grade. Our teachers enjoy making creative and educational lessons that make a day at school fun! Students are respectful and enjoy being good citizens. We have a dedicated staff, parental support, and a generous PTA. However, with the ever changing educational dollar, resources, materials, and technology are becoming harder and harder to come by for the classroom teacher who want to expose students to be "creative" thinkers. Finally, due to where we're located in California, we don't often get the funding for programs that other schools get. Thanks for helping to fund this grant application and allowing my students to be better thinkers and builders!
My Project
Part of the NEW NGSS Science Standards are for students to understand "Motion and Stability" and "Earth's Place in the Universe". Students will learn about geometry and physics while also making predictions and assumptions about why objects fall because of gravity, both here on Earth and other planets like Mars.
Therefore, students will design, build, and launch their own landing vehicle using classroom materials (popsicle sticks, tape, plastic bags, balloons, string, etc.) to see whether or not they can successfully protect an uncooked egg from cracking on the surface while being thrown from a height of more than twenty-five feet.
The GoPro video camera will be used during construction, launching, and landing to record students' successes and/or failures. This science lesson will also motivate students to learn more about Mars, which will stimulate a conversation about life on other planets, and will allow them to use their imaginations and creativity to see if they could build a successful landing vehicle like the one NASA built for Mars!
