Imagine a classroom of 20 children who love to read and enjoy interacting with a variety of texts. They get excited when new books are put in the library. They can get frustrated because there is a lack of comfortable seating and a lack of storage for the books they find enjoyment and excitement in.
This class consists of 20 enthusiastic, hardworking, active, and inquisitive students.
They come from a variety of family, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The school is a suburban school that is 87% free and reduced lunch eligible.
These children do not get many opportunities to interact with different types of print and books at home. Multiple students have told me that they do not have books at home and they only read when they are at school. Because of this, I want to create an open and exciting library for them.
My Project
Our current library is cluttered, uncomfortable, and unorganized due to lack of storage bins, room, and comfy seating. With these materials, I will have the children work with me to sort through the books that we have and organize them into categories for the book bins.
I will put the rug down in the library to make the floor more comfortable to sit on and put the soft seats there for seating as well. My students love to sit in the actual library area and explore all of the books there, but it gets easily crowded and uncomfortable because of the lack of seating and storage.
I think that this project will make a difference to my students and the students I have for the next few years.
Children have a natural attraction to and curiosity towards books, print, and reading. This project will allow for a better organized library so that they can explore books without getting frustrated. This will help increase their interest in reading and get them familiar with a variety of texts including fiction and nonfiction and with variety of topics.
