Third grade is a time of wonder and discovery. Excitement radiates off of my students when they arrive on the first day of school. Each year one of the things I hear from them is that they can't wait to get to read the "hard chapter books".
I consider it an important part of my job to encourage and instill a love of reading in my students.
Watching my students' eyes light up when I introduce a new book is an amazing feeling. It warms my heart when former students tell me that they began to love reading for enjoyment while they were in my classroom.
My Project
Independent reading time is a something my students love. Although they enjoy getting to choose a special place to sit around the room, they are either sitting on a hard floor, often with no back support, or in their plastic desk chairs. They rarely complain about the lack of seating options, but I think about it every time they find their spot. I've tried using pillows and beanbag chairs in the past, but I have found that they lose their fluff by the end of the school year. These chairs are sturdy, yet soft, and have washable covers!
I want my students to be able to get comfy while getting lost in a good book!
Comfy floor seats will make their reading time so much better. When reading at home, we curl up on a couch or in our favorite chair, and I want my students to enjoy that same level of comfort in our classroom.
