My Students
Welcome! Ithink that art is a natural connection to other areas of study, and the projects I write are in keeping with that idea. My students and I are thankful for any donations towards our art room.
About 100 students a day, ranging from Kindergarten to 4th Grade come to the art room for an hour each session.
I like my room to be a welcoming, comfortable space where students can share their ideas and explore the many avenues that art includes.
My school is a neighborhood school with 50+ years of history in the community. My K-4 students mostly live in the neighborhood, although some commute. Our school is a lively place, with many student's parents and grandparents having attended here as well. We have an ELL population, which is primarily Spanish speaking.
My Project
My faculty and I are always looking for ways to make reading a part of our lessons, and encourage students to find opportunities to read. I envision a reading corner in the art room to be a place where we meet to generate ideas as a group, but also where the students can go to have a quiet space to reflect, or generate their own ideas. To do this, we need a beanbag chair and pillows to make the space comfortable, inviting and conducive to reading.
With a reading corner, my students will read for pleasure.
They will begin to incorporate the ideas they generate into their art projects, making for richer experiences, deeper thoughts, and higher success rate in their artwork. Given the opportunity to read, reflect, meet together, and be comfortable in the space will help communication and problem solving skills among peers.
