Cozy Reading Rocking Chair #3

Help me give my students a rocking chair to make the library feel like a home away from home

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Jess Hinds's classroom raised $512

My Project

In August we received a blue rocking chair through DonorsChoose, and so many students loved using it for reading that we have submitted two additional grants for rocking chairs. Thank you for furnishing our space and creating a cozy reading community!

Our library is a warm and vibrant hub in Harlem, New York.

Murals outside the school celebrate the accomplishments of renowned authors such as Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, and the school's namesake orator and leader, Sojourner Truth, a fierce advocate for literacy. At our school, we want the library to be a haven, an inspiration, and a launchpad for academic excellence.

The rocking chair will provide a cozy, inviting space to help students focus on the joy of reading.

Students who are on the spectrum or have ADHD or have experienced hardship or trauma may have trouble focusing on books in the library. In my past experience, I've found it beneficial to provide various kinds of seating to meet the needs of all students. In our difficult world, we all have so much on our minds and so many distractions. I can't imagine that there's anyone in the school who wouldn't find the cozy reading chair helpful at some moment in their lives. By meeting students' needs for vestibular stimulation, and creating an area that is separate from the rest of the library, we make reading accessible and possible for all.

A rocking chair might seem like a small thing, but it signals that our library is more than an educational space--it's also a home and a comfort. It's a place where dreams can grow.
