it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine a child not having the pleasure of reading? Can you imagine not having the opportunity to dream about and explore the many places one can visit through a book?
Many of my students come from homes where they parents do not read to them.
They also do not see their parents read. They spend a lot of time in front of the television set watching cartoons, sitcoms and playing video games. In some cases, parents do not know how to read even in their native language. My students attend a Title I school in a densely populated neighborhood.
My Project
Although our classroom library has grown in the number of books it has, it is not nearly as inviting as it can be to the children. They need a comfortable seating area where they can sit while they immerse themselves in a wonderful book. Where do you usually sit to read a book? A cozy place, right? I am certain that the students will be more motivated and eager to pick up a book to read from the classroom library if they have a cozy place to sit.
A cozy seat = more reading!
Now imagine the children taking their experience of reading a book from a cozy seat in the classroom to their couch in the living room of their home. That equals more reading. They will then become role models for their families.
