My students need bean bags for cozy reading spaces besides their hard framed desks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My co-teacher and I have a wonderfully diverse classroom in Queens, NYC. Our students are from Mali, Guyana, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ecuador, and Nigeria, to name a few. We have an academically diverse group of learners as we co-teach 33 students; some are identified with special learning needs and others are strong academic learners. We have a large class population with a tight class space. We do our best to rotate the students at least bi-monthly around the room for a fresh learning view and new neighbors to team up with.
We have a high emphasis on learning to love to read and to read a variety of genres.
Each day we set aside time for independent reading to help refocus the students and give us time to read one-to-one and have conferences to touch base. Reading helps the imagination flourish, and we encourage books that they "can't put down!"
My Project
Our students have a small classroom space for 35 bodies - 33 kids, 2 teachers. It's hard for anybody to sit at a hard desk all day and continue to enjoy each and every moment enough to be engaged.
We would like to see our students enjoy reading more by providing them a soft/cozy space.
The bean bags would allow them to move from their working group space to create a space of their own. This individual space would allow them "to get lost in their books' adventures." Students can move to a special spot in the classroom or they could easily transport them to the hallway. Some students may want to group two or three bean bags together to create a small book club. Luckily bean bags can be easily stacked for storage at the end of the day.
Unfortunately, not all our students are guaranteed a couch or cozy chair to sit on at home for pleasurable reading. We'd like to bring this comfort to the classroom and keep them excited about independent reading time.
