This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a first-year teacher, building my classroom from scratch! My students come from a very low socio-economic background, if there are in a two-parent household, both parents work. Many of our children are being raised by grandparents and fosters. My students do not have literature-rich homes in general and crave literature. I hope to establish a classroom library for the fourth-grade students that can be shared with all and loved for years to come.

My Project

Every year, incoming fourth-graders are introduced to gain more independence and choice with their reading. As a result, students fall in love with reading and begin reading for pleasure! As we launch into the beginning of the school year, these new fourth-graders learn to build stamina and trust to become strong, independent readers. However, our classroom is missing a few key items to provide instruction for better reading, such as a small group whiteboard and a document camera. Our classroom has books for students to choose from, but students also deserve a comfortable place, of their choice, to read.

Not only does choice improve student learning, but it also improves student interest in reading!

Most of the items needed will allow for students to curl up with their book in a cozy chair or mat, of their choice, to then dive into the literature they have chosen. The items remaining will allow for better instruction. Please help these new fourth-graders fall in love with reading!
