This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students tend to do much better in class when they are closely interacting and engaging with the teacher. However, it becomes distracting for the students trying to teach on a carpet full of dirt, grime, soil, and stains; one that probably hasn't been cleaned in years. Our students deserve the best!
My first grade students come from a low socioeconomic, educational, and professional family background.
Despite circumstantial disadvantages, these students are very eager and motivated to learn and succeed. Anything that may be provided with in the classroom, they appreciate and thankfully embrace.
Since the beginning of the 2011 school year, close to 60% of our students have progressed from a Kinder Reading Level to a First Grade Reading Level. They have been able to do so under the above stated conditions. It is our belief that an additional 10%-15% of these students will improve to current grade levels with these classroom upgrades.
We as professionals are the gate keepers for tomorrows leaders, and it is our duty to make sure that they have the proper environment and resources available to them. Coupled with the aforementioned and the ability and desire to learn, these students will act as beacons of light for other students, the school district, and the community as a whole.
My Project
With a new carpet my students will be able to receive modeled and guided lessons up close and personally. The chances of the students becoming disengaged would decrease, as I would have a better idea of who is grasping the concepts versus who may need more attention. Additionally, we project that absenteeism would also decrease. I have a handful of students who suffer from asthma, and as we are aware, collected dirt and dust can trigger asthma attacks, as well as allergic reactions.
As for the soft seats and canopy that will be placed in our classroom library, it will give them an appealing place to sit, relax, and enjoy their reading. It will provide them with a livelier reading corner in our room. This gives the children some time to practice and continue developing their reading skills on their own or with a partner.
Providing comfortable settings for students enables them to focus solely on the their scholastic tasks instead of wrestling with the disadvantages they face.
It is believed that at first grade our students ability to create and absorb a scholastic foundation for themselves begins.
It is paramount that we give them the tools, the resources, the environment, and the professionals to give them optimal chance to build better futures for themselves, their families, as well as the communities both near and far.
Never in history has it been more important than to give these upcoming leaders the best chance to keep the future of this country on course.
