My Project
I believe returning to school after the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge for many students. During that time, they missed out on so much social emotional learning that happens naturally when kids interact with each other. Now, social anxiety is common among students, which hinders communication and collaboration.
Engaging in discussion is a central theme in my science classroom, as it is a crucial skill for scientists to develop.
To ease social anxiety and encourage discussion and teamwork, I want to make my classroom as welcoming and relaxing for students as possible by providing comfortable seating.
Flexible seating will also give students opportunities for agency in choosing a location to work with others so they feel empowered in their learning. Middle schoolers desire to be taken seriously and to have greater levels of independence, so I intentionally chose pieces with a more grown-up feel to reflect this. I know my students will love this classroom addition!
