My Students

When students look back on their days in science class, they typically remember the dissections and labs that they did. In our science classrooms at my middle school, our students become so excited to learn and learn much more effectively when we are able to do hands-on learning.

I teach eighth grade in a high "Free and Reduced Lunch" area.

My students love to be active and love to learn about how the topics we learn in science relate to them. For most of my students, science is their favorite subject. Whenever we have a demonstration or participate in a lab, they are so excited to come to class. Many of them dream of working in a science field and as middle schoolers, many of them are trying to figure out what they want to do and who they want to be when they grow up. As a middle school, we really foster allowing the students to be able to make their own choices and give them the opportunity to find out all about themselves and their goals in life. Our school goes above and beyond to make sure our students are prepared in education and life and creates many choices for students to discover themselves. We were even a "Cool School" on the local news! Our students are wonderful and deserve to be given even more opportunities.

My Project

With these eyes, my students will really be able to develop an understanding of how light waves work and how they themselves are able to see the world around them. Many students come from seventh grade, which is life science, expecting eighth grade science to be just as invigorating with chemistry labs and dissections. In eighth grade, we cover mostly earth science and forces and motion, which struggles to find as many hands on labs as the year before. With the eyes, we would be able to invest our students greatly in the importance of waves and their relation to human eyes. Students will be able to use these eyes with a partner to discover the retina, cornea and many other uses of a cow's eye that directly relates to them. My students will learn about light waves and how they travel through the eye to the brain to develop an image and also be able to understand more it is so important that we take care of our own eyes.

This donation will greatly improve my classroom because it will not only invest my students in science, but how closely related waves are to their body even.

The conceptual learning is a very big struggle in the waves unit, and my students will be able to use their inquiry and lab practices to bring light waves and the human eye to life.
