This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. All students in our system, due to living in a high-poverty area, receive free breakfast and lunch through the community eligibility program. The majority of my sweet students do not attend preschool before entering Kindergarten. A large number of them are EL learners. I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative, developmentally appropriate, and meaningful learning experiences. The growth from August to May is almost unbelievable! Our school is special in that we are a Pre-K and Kindergarten-only school. Everything we do is for 4-6 year olds! We typically serve over 600 students a year!
I have been teaching and LOVING Kindergarten since 1995.
I taught 1/2 a school year in first grade. I am blessed, honored, and humbled to be able to teach and influence 18 Kindergarten students each school year. Each child has a story and I am honored to be part of that.
I am grateful to have had DonorsChoose.org grant proposals funded in the past. I am glad to be back and hopeful someone will see the value in the materials I am requesting for my kiddos!
My Project
To return to school or not to return . . . during the times of COVID! Fortunately, our local school system gave our families the option to choose what is best for their student(s) and families, whether traditional school or virtual school. Our school system has taken into consideration guidelines that came from the CDC as well as our state DPH. The school board and administrators have devised plans above and beyond what has been suggested, as far as returning to school safely. All employees will be receiving training on various safety and cleaning protocols in early August. As a Kindergarten teacher, we are all about working with our friends.
It is my responsibility, during these unprecedented times, to keep my Kinders safe, while still providing them with fun, meaningful learning experiences.
I have spent time coming up with ways to keep them safe as they work and play in our classroom. The flexible seating will allow the children to space out. The trays will allow us to spread out and work on the rug for groups. The circle dots will allow us to continue to have our ever-important rugtime and still be safely apart. The materials I have ordered will allow children to have "their own" things, instead of community items. Thank you very much for your time and consideration to my project!
