This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a career and technical high school in the South Bronx. The majority of students are learning a trade; we have five areas of interest: architecture, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. We strive to make our school welcoming and supportive of the young professionals who attend our school either in-person or remotely.
This school year has been exceeding challenging due to COVID-19; more and more students choose to be remote.
Our students are missing out on the regular hands-on instruction in their trades. As a staff, we hope to supplement their learning with electronic magazines, giving them access to updated trade information. Hopefully, I am encouraging them to stay motivated while increasing industry standards.
Will you help us keep our students informed and integrated into the vast world of work-based learning?.
My Project
No one can really say what the impact has been of COVID-19. My special education students have struggled during remote learning; some have had parents and family members die. Others have had detrimental economic difficulties, needing to work themselves to help their families. Other students have had a loss of learning and social skills that they will not easily regain. However, I believe that students are resilient and my students more so than most, already living in the South Bronx surrounded by poverty, racism, and violence.
They have a desire to make their families proud; however, trauma impacts them.
In counseling, I try my best to get them to open up and talk. I have found that if I keep their hands busy, I can often get them to open up more. These resources will help them relax enough to start unpacking what they have been through during COVID.
The Teacher pay Teacher resources will help me keep them engaged with their counseling process and provide resources to assist in running group counseling. My students deserve to talk about the trauma they have endured and start building themselves up again with the help of kind people who understand that it takes a village.
