My Students

My students typically fight through many obstacles to attain their diploma. My students have dreams of a better future understanding that knowledge is the key. They deserve my best and I work to provide a classroom environment that is safe and equipped with all the tools they need to reach their goals.

All of my students have been touched by the violence in Chicago and the pandemic has added to the challenges that they face.

The fact that I can say "all" without wavering should clearly indicate the day to day struggles we face. Too many of my students struggle with anxiety in a community where safety is not guaranteed. Through uncertainty and fear, they come to to school.

Prior to coming to here, students have had at least one year in traditional public school but recognize the value of alternative education. Smaller classrooms allow us to meet the social and emotional needs of our students as well as their educational needs. I strive to create a learning environment where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, challenge themselves and achieve.

My Project

Very few of my underprivileged students arrive at school with the proper materials to learn so each year I provide supplies for my students to use. Normally supplies are sorted in bins and students grab what they need when class begins and return them when class ends. With the "new normal" of in-person learning, I realized I needed a way to provide students with individual classroom supplies.

This project will allow me to provide 120 students with individual supply kits to make sure that they have the needed tools for learning.

While the bulk of these items will be for in-person learning, a portion will be set aside for sign-out by those in remote learning situations. Student kits will be readily accessible and sanitized daily.

In my classroom I work to help students develop strong academic practices through the use of interactive notebooks and the Cornell Notetaking system. These strategies are designed to strengthen learning and comprehension. The supplies I selected will allow students to properly organize, highlight and creatively record important information from classroom lectures, readings and research.
