COVID Can't Stop Our Reading, Part 2

Help me give my students digital readers for safe independent reading in the classroom.

My Students

My school is a small school with only 2 classes per grade level. This year, I will work with 4th-8th grade students with disabilities in the subject of Language Arts, or Reading and Writing. While many of my students find this subject challenging, they are eager to learn whether we are online or in person. My students need resources to persevere and learn through the pandemic.

My Project

There's no doubt that education has changed forever in light of COVID, though I've chosen to see this period as an opportunity for growth and change. One thing I have been thinking a lot about is independent reading. Normally, students share hard copies of books. Since I don't know how soon we will be able to get back to crisp traditional pages, I need to get digital texts in the hands of kids.

Independent reading is a foundational practice in my classroom and no pandemic is going to stop our classroom community from reading.

This year, it just looks a little different. I'd like to obtain as many Kindle Paperwhite e-readers for access to texts via PDFs. The Paperwhite model is waterproof, so we can assign each device to one student per class and sanitize them in between each use. A paperback book would never hold up to the level of sanitizing that I believe needs to occur to keep my students safe. Additionally, we can pack up to 6,000 titles on each device. This mean students have almost limitless text options. No more running out of physical shelf space in the classroom!

Thank you for helping to keep my students healthy and learning.
