This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have been teaching for almost twenty years now and I have never been so worried, scared, angry, and upset at the litany of laws that have just passed that will impact my students at our Title I school and all American children. To be clear, our school has no music, no theater, no advanced science classes, no computer lab, etc. So, what does a Black woman teacher who teaches AP World History, AP Seminar, and Law classes do? I will educate my students about the realities on the ground, rooted in the law, and grounded on our history of advocacy and protest. I will teach my students to the history of divide and conquer as we have watched the Supreme Court pit Asian-American students against African-American, Indigenous, and Latinx students. We will not sit by as civil rights that generations have fought hard for are obliterated.
I apologize for the tone and tenure of this mini-grant but these are not ordinary time and it is all hands on deck to mitigate the generational damage that is about to occur.
To that end, I am asking for a class set of "Covering: The Hidden Assault On Our Civil Rights," by Kenji Yoshino. This book will be used specifically in my Law classes and AP Seminar class. Students must understand the history of the civil rights struggle and the forces in this country that are working to erode or eradicate the civil rights that they had been born with. This book will challenge students intellectually while at the same time teaching them a much-needed legal history that intersects with current times.
