Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school consists of over 700 students in preschool through fifth grade. Almost 90% of our population is considered low income and qualifies for free lunch. Our school represents a wide range of cultures.

My students are newcomers from another country and struggling readers that come to the learning center on a daily basis to receive extra support in language development and reading.

Although they struggle to read independently, they enjoy read-alouds and shared readings where they are able to engage in rich discussions that lead towards making connection, partner sharing, retelling stories or sharing newly learned knowledge with their peers through different collaborative groupings.

My Project

For the last two months, I have been trying to motivate my students to become active learners because they had pretty much given up on themselves. Therefore, I had students read about “Courageous kids” such as Iqbal, a Pakistanian slave, who spoke against child labor and Alexandra Scott, a four year old who began a lemonade stand to raise money to find a cure for cancer. After completing the unit, my students were inspired! As they compared themselves to the children, they felt empowered and also wanted to make a difference. Therefore, my project will focus on the following: In class we started our parent engagement project where they’re writing about what they will be advocating for, how they will fundraise and how will their parents support them in this project. I will use the binding combs to create a book with their written work. Students will take them home and use the sticky notes to write about their experience. I will ask them to take pictures so that in class we can add them to the book and use the Cricut to make designs for each page that they fill.

This project is important because my students will apply what they learn in class to real life skills.

More importantly, their parents will be involved as they help them reach out to the community, build anything they might need, help them create flyers to get in contact with local leaders and get others involved in advocating for what their children find important. Currently, some of the projects consist of finding homes for pets, feeding the homeless, and feeding birds.
