My Students

My students are full of energy, excited to learn, and naturally inquisitive. They want to be engaged in the lessons, instead of being passive learners.

With STEAM/STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), and computer science, students are engaged, and solving both real-life, and fictional problems.

My school has 1000 diverse students coming from different socioeconomic statuses in the largest school district in South Carolina. We have some students in our school who have critical basic needs. Some of our students are homeless, living in hotels, and living below the poverty line.

My Project

We need a class set of the book, Freak the Mighty, and bookshelves to store our books. Freak the Mighty is a powerful story of a unique friendship between a troubled, oversized boy and the tiny, physically challenged genius who proves that courage comes in all sizes. This simple yet timeless story explores many themes, including bullying--an important topic in today's schools.

In the beginning of the book, Maxwell Kane is a young boy with low self-esteem.

He lives with his grandfather, Grim, and grandmother, Gram. Max sets the stage for the story by reminiscing about his time in daycare, when he had met a boy named Kevin, or Freak, as their classmates called him. Kevin has Morquio syndrome, wears leg braces and uses crutches, and thinks of himself as a robot and is bullied by many bigger kids due to his short height. However, Max likes Kevin and thinks the crutches and leg braces are neat.

This story is about resilience, accepting people as they are, and anti-bullying and I look forward to my sixth graders reading this book and discussing these important topics. We also need book shelves to store the class set of books, so the books can be enjoyed for years to come!
