My Students

Working with the concept of numbers is difficult for Kindergarteners. They require counters or manipulatives to represent those numbers. I need additional counters to support their daily learning goals.

Many of our Kindergarten students lack the resources that will set them up for academic success.

They come into school every day eager to learn something new. We are a Title I school with about 600 students. The majority of my students are English Language Learners who need additional materials to support learning new vocabulary and skills simultaneously. Many people have said that our school is a hidden treasure and for that reason it can be difficult to locate. Because we are tucked into a small neighborhood, we do not receive much community support to fund classroom needs. Many of our teachers purchase materials independently or seek funding for materials.

My Project

My students need various math manipulatives, colored rice for an art project, and laminating pouches. I once thought that when they learned how to show, add or subtract with one type of counter that they could do it with any counter. This is not the case. They need various counters that will be used on different days for similar skills. The Connecting People, Mini-Motors, and Animals counters will provide them with the different needed resources. We will be creating an art project focused on math and science later this year and the colored rice will give my students one medium to choose when creating their works of art. The laminating pouches will be used for various sheets I need to laminate like the sight words and content words that I post on the Word Wall.
