Counting Towards Common Core!

My students need math counters and hands-on counting trays in order to understand number sense and cardinality.

My Students

"1 little 2 little 3 little children, 4 little 5 little 6 little children, 7 little 8 little 9 little children, 10 little children in all...." My kindergartners love to count out loud and tell me how many items they see.

My kinder monkeys are super cute, active little people who are hungry to learn, eager to smile and play, and are learning to joke with me in English.

They are the invisible children in our society. 98% of our school population depends upon the free and reduced-priced breakfast and lunch for their food, and every single one of them depends upon us to teach them English and the basic social, self-care and academic skills many lucky children learn in the home. Their parents often work 2 or 3 menial labor jobs in order to provide basic shelter. The parents are invested in their children's academic success, yet since only a few parents can read either English or Spanish, I have to show the parents how to do each kindergarten homework page so they can help their children. The parents want to learn as much as the kids do, which is great.

My Project

Although we have been working on understanding the various parts of number sense, such as quantity, one-to-one correspondence and counting the entire school year, some of my students still do not know how many 5 are, and others skip numbers when counting. These counting boxes and counters will help the kids tremendously. Each counting box is divided into 30 little sections and labeled with its number. A child will say the number out loud as she/he puts a counter into each section. These counting boxes and counters will make an abstract concept concrete as they will see how many 7 are and that 8 is one more.

We have run out of shoes, fingers, and legs to count, but still need more practice! Your generous donation will keep my students engaged and practicing their counting as well as building their understanding of quantities.
