My Project
I am requesting donations to create a classroom set of counting collections to support my students in building strong number sense and confidence in math. Research has shown that counting collections are a powerful, hands-on way for students to explore numbers, quantity, and place value. According to educators like Megan Franke and the Cognitively Guided Instruction team, using counting collections regularly helps students develop flexible thinking, accuracy, and a deeper understanding of how numbers work. These materials give students the chance to work with real objects, make estimations, count in groups, and explain their thinking—critical skills that build a solid foundation for future math success.
My goal with this project is to provide engaging, developmentally appropriate math experiences that allow students to explore numbers in meaningful ways.
Each collection will offer opportunities for collaboration, problem-solving, and communication as students discuss strategies and compare results. My students are curious, capable, and eager to learn, and these resources will support their growth by making math accessible and fun. With counting collections as a regular part of our math routine, I can help students develop not only stronger math skills, but also the confidence to see themselves as mathematicians.
