My students need fun math manipulatives, storage solutions, a camera to capture our learning and fun, as well as cardstock and laminating supplies for fun workstations!
I teach at an incredibly diverse elementary school filled with over 850 passionate mathematicians, scientists, readers, and writers! What makes our school unique is that over 24% of our students are English Language Learners who speak over 35 different languages. My homeroom is filled with gifted and talented students and I switch classes with my partner teacher who has a class of students who do not speak English, but they are learning quickly! My students are certainly driven to succeed, and my goal is to facilitate that success by any means possible!
My Project
One of my smallest requests, yet probably the most important, is the counting chart. The chart will help us in our daily counting and skip counting practice, and is also an incredibly valuable tool when teaching place value, addition and subtraction, coins, and more! Another request, is some additional math manipulatives. Counting bears and snap cubes are important for every day counting, and learning how to model addition and subtraction. First graders really need these hands-on manipulatives to understand why we do addition and subtraction, and what it all needs. I've also requested some geometry sets simply because learning about these and their attributes has to be hands on. Students need to be able to build these shapes, as well as count faces, edges and vertices while holding the actual shape.
I specifically requested a large number of book bins and supply caddies because I truly believe that organization is imperative in the classroom.
I've found that it prevents distractions, as well as wasted instuctional time. I want my students to to enter the class, have a designated spot for their materials, and be able to find their learning tools already arranged in caddies at their tables. This prevents fumbling around, searching for needed tools, and the ever-present issue of lost supplies. My goal is that my students will help to keep the organization through their classroom jobs, and really take pride in a neat and tidy learning environment.
All of these items will be used on a daily basis in our classroom. I know that engagement and understanding will go up with these products, especially with my ESL students. Not only are they having to learn a whole new language, but they are also learning new skills. Having an organized classroom and the right manipulatives will certainly help!
