Counting on Christmas

My Students

Our school is in Cypress Hill, Brooklyn, NY. It is a brand-new STEM focused school with a lot of potential. The school includes students from 3K to kindergarten, and it is a melting pot of children from all around the world.

Our school is in a high-poverty area, and about 95% of the students in the school receive free lunch.

There are 15 energetic three and four-year-old children in my class but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students' education because of the budget cuts. Although our families give us support, they can't always help out financially.

My Project

I am requesting 15 "Merry Christmas Mouse!" books to give to my students for a winter recess gift. This counting book is one of my favorite holiday books and it is perfect for my students because they can use the illustrations in the book to read it independently as they practice counting 1 to 10.

Counting books can serve different purposes depending on the child’s understanding of numbers.

For example, counting books initially may be a tool for helping children learn to count, whether that means learning the counting word sequence, the purpose of counting, and some early number words, such as one, two, or three. Then, for children who already have some understanding of counting, these books can provide an opportunity to practice counting and deepen knowledge of counting principles, larger numbers, and numerical properties.
