Counting and Sorting and Patterns, Oh My!

My students need math manipulatives to reinforce math concepts taught in Kindergarten. Items requested include: pattern blocks, foam dice and various counting activities.

My Students

"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics" - Paul Halmos. My Kindergarten students are a group of active learners that need hands-on learning experiences to make abstract math concepts concrete, in other words to do mathematics in order to learn mathematics!

In our school nearly 90% of the population is eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Many of my students have not had the opportunities or experiences necessary to develop an understanding of early math concepts. According to research sited in Early Education for All, "... early math knowledge is a powerful predictor of later learning." I want all of my students to have the opportunity to develop the early math skills necessary to promote further learning. Math manipulatives will help start them on the road to being life-long mathematicians.

My Project

My students are active five and six year olds with a wide range of abilities and experiences. Using math manipulatives not only makes math more concrete and fun, but also allows for differentiation within the classroom. The manipulatives will be used in both small groups and individual instruction to provide a wide range of math opportunities meeting the needs of individual students. The manipulatives will also be used to create math stations for exploring and practicing various math concepts individually and with a partner. Some of the math concepts that will be taught using manipulatives are counting, number recognition, patterns, shapes, sorting, addition and subtraction.

Adding math manipulatives to our classroom will provide my students with learning opportunities they have yet to experience.

It will help make math both fun and real to my students. My hope is that through these manipulatives and other Math opportunities my students will develop the early skills necessary to help them succeed both in Kindergarten and beyond!
