Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students enter our online classroom every morning, ready and eager to learn. No longer are the days of playing house and sandbox all day in kindergarten. The opportunity to work and play in person is also put on hold. These students are bursting with great potential to be our future leaders. They consist of mostly English language learners that attend a low socioeconomic school where over 75 % of our families qualify for free breakfast and lunch. This can present challenges but also creates wonderful opportunities. In my classroom, we learn together and from each other.

They have the most caring hearts and an incredible capacity to learn while taking on challenging lessons, classroom responsibilities, and building friendships.

It is not hard to believe these children will grow to be our best and brightest future. I am so grateful to be a part of their first step in the love of learning in our wonderful public school.

My Project

Learning online has become a big adjustment for the five year-olds in class but with this project we can give them a sense of normalcy that they would have in a typical classroom. My project focuses on giving each child their own math tool kit to learn along with me through the computer screen.

Developing number sense with be critical to all future math and science development.

These math tools will allow the students to begin to see just how numbers work. They will develop their one-to-one correspondence and be able to compose and decompose numbers. Grabbing a handful of colorful counters will not only let them see what six looks like, but soon will discover that 6 is three bugs and three sea animals, or 2 red cubes and four blue cubes. These will create engaging and developmentally appropriate math lessons that will truly help them develop the love of learning.
