This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are wonderful scholars entering school for the very first time. They are enthusiastic future world changers who need your helping hand. While they may live in a community with challenges they strive to improve themselves through hard work and optimistic outlooks. The school community is a diverse neighborhood in Philadelphia with wonderful families. Sadly, the area as been hit by opioid addiction and economic hardship. Many of my students rely on our school for both warm meals and a safe place to simply be a child. I want our classroom to go from a drab square to a warm, welcoming safe place overflowing with educational opportunity.
My Project
Counting Collections is an interactive opportunity for children to count a collection of objects. They count the items one-by-one or skip-count by groups etc.During this activity children organize and count the collection provide recordings how they counted. While students are working I circulate, observing children’s strategies, problem solving with students, highlighting efficient or inefficient strategies that are being used. Having these collection as a fixture in my room will allow me to discuss and record students understanding of concepts. Students math vocabulary will increase by providing varies opportunities. The peer to peer interaction will support partners to work together meaningfully a practice that had been disrupted through virtual learning.
Counting collections provide students with meaningful opportunities to explore the complexities of numbers as well as build foundational math skills that young learners need to master.
I would like to offer students a variety of opportunities to sort their thinking and build problem solving skills. The items selected were chosen to provide variety and build excitement about the joy of counting. The ability to problem solve using counting collections will support students and their mathematical growth for a lifetime.
