This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a school counselor in a middle school with approximately nine hundred students. My school is located in the inner city, with students that mostly come from low, socio-economic living conditions. About ninety-five percent of our students are on free or reduced-price lunch. We believe that our students are capable of achieving great things with support from our staff, community partners and parents.
As a counselor, I ensure the social, emotional and academic needs of students are met while providing support to parents, teachers, and staff.
I provide services to my students such as individual counseling, group counseling, academic planning, classroom guidance and career interest preparation. I also provide staff development presentations and parent workshops.
My Project
The materials in this project will help me provide my students with a safe space to calm down during school hours when they need a break or may be experiencing a hard time at school.
Calm down corners are usually in a floor space with items that were specifically chosen to help with regaining self-control.
These items include a comfortable space to sit and is well equipped with things like paper, writing tools, breathing toys, posters, and calm down toys.
These materials are interesting and will provide the students with the necessary tools to calm down and get back to class.
