My Students
I work with some incredible kindergarten through fourth graders that are currently receiving counseling services to support them in adjusting to school, regulating their emotions, improving their social skills, and building their self-confidence. They love learning and are funny, resilient, loving, and hard working students. They love school and desperately miss coming into the building everyday to see their teachers and friends.
My Project
Our school has been closed for in-person learning since March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We immediately began providing students with counseling services, virtually. While students continue to sign into their sessions with a smile each week, they desperately miss attending school and receiving their services in person. We were recently notified that our school will not open until March (at the earliest) and are very worried about the impact that the continued school closure will have on our students' mental health and social development.
Our remote counseling kits will be provided to each student that receives counseling services and will be individualized with items that the students will use in teletherapy sessions with their clinicians and in work, with their families at home.
These resources will really help to diversify what we can do with students virtually, encourage their continued engagement in services, and work towards their social and emotional learning goals. It will also allow us to modify our sessions in ways that will make teletherapy developmentally appropriate for all of our students, increasing their level of participation in services.
The students will be provided with supplies for art therapy activities to promote self-expression and tools for practicing emotion-regulation strategies at home. Some of the resources will be used for play therapy techniques (such as puppets that the kids can create to use in sessions virtually). Additionally, some students will receive their own copy of a book that is being used for bibliotherapy to work towards their own goals. While we have been fortunate to be able to continue our work with students remotely, the kids deeply miss being able to come into the counseling office and curiously explore the materials firsthand. This will help us to bring parts of the office back to them.
