This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm wrapping up my 3rd year working as the school psychologist at my elementary school and I have developed some good working relationships with my students. A majority of my students are English Language Learners and are from a low SES community. Most of the students that I work with receive special education services under eligibilities of Other Health Impairment, Autism and specific learning disability. I provide DIS counseling to multiple students and we mainly focus on coping skills, social skills, self-awareness, self-esteem, effective communication, etc. Most importantly, I try to create a welcoming environment where my students feel safe and comfortable to share their feelings and talk candidly about their life experiences.

It is incredible how strong and resilient my students are despite the challenges that they face.

My students are a fun bunch! I not only want them to be comfortable and have fun in counseling, I also want them to learn the appropriate skills necessary to successfully navigate through elementary school, middle school, high school and beyond. My ultimate goal for my students is to be happy and kind to others.

My Project

I am still in my early years of being a school psychologist. Though I have acquired my own supplies here and there, my office is still lacking. I want my space to be a welcoming, fun, enriching, safe, and conducive environment to my students' social emotional learning.

The materials that I am requesting through this project will do just that!

I've requested some basic items that I think are essential in any school psychologist's office, such as spiky rings, stress balls, 'splat' items, Buddha board, zen sand garden, etc. These things will not only help my students focus and enjoy their time in counseling, but it can also help them open up about whatever is going on in their lives. It will also help them calm down and relax. I've also requested expanding ball toys which will be used for deep breathing exercises, which is an essential coping skill I teach all of my students. Furthermore, I've requested the games of Uno and Connect 4 because all school psychologists need these games to build rapport when meeting new students! It helps us create a relationship that will facilitate the student's reception to what we want to teach them and ultimately their progress.

I am excited to have these materials so that I can create an even better office space!
