My Project
Hi, I am a mental health counselor at an elementary site. This is going to be my 9th year working and since starting my career, I have seen a shift in the social-emotional needs of my students. Last year, I had more students with meltdowns, in crisis or in need of a safe quiet space to be.
In order to meet the needs of my students, I would love to create a calming corner in my classroom for students to express and learn about their feelings.
I hope this space not only is a safe place for them to express their emotions and calm their bodies/minds, but also a space for them to learn and appropriately express their emotions. In my project, I've included bean bags, a rug, and pieces of furniture to facilitate my safe space, but also books and fidgets as tools to help students understand their emotions. My goal is that every student who comes into my room will not only have a safe space on campus but it is also valuable in helping them grow.
