Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been a teacher of kindergarten children for the past 9 years. Collectively I have taught for 20, but the most rewarding have been the years spent in Kindergarten. My students come from predominately low income families, so I try to provide as much enrichment in our daily schedule as possible. Dramatic play is a great way to incorporate this in my classroom.

The boys and girls in my class are often subjected to parents who work long hours. Once the children are picked up from school, some staying as late as 6:00pm, children have very little opportunity for play. They are either set in front of the television or put directly to bed after supper.

Even though the school day is filled with academics and learning, it is also important for young children to have opportunity for play. The Dramatic Play Center is always a favorite for the children. I have food and blocks and a few hats, but costumes for the children to dress up in would really enhance their imaginative play.

How cool to dress as a king and rule over the play dinosaurs. Or how about dressing as a nurse and taking care of the doll patients. Why not dress as a police officer and direct cars in a block built neighborhood. A chef dressed with a toque, chef's hat, would really allow a child to prepare quite a feast. Wherever a child's imagination may take them, a great costume couldn't hurt.
