About My Students

I teach Chemistry to a diverse group of artistic students at a Title I visual and performing arts school in downtown Los Angeles. Students come from all over the city to our public high school to receive a top notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual or theater) and go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country. My students feel very strongly about developing a community that is safe, secure, and welcoming of all peers no matter who they are and they have shown an interest in starting a sewing club on campus.

Sewing skills would not only increase their ability to contribute to arts-related activities on campus (hello Costume Design!) and build their leadership by creating and developing a school club (hello College Brag Sheet!), but it actually integrates a ton of math, technology, and science (shhh don't tell them please!).

Engineering skills will help my students in learning how to thread and operate a serging machine in order to design, plan, and apply basic sewing skills to create a garment. Geometry skills, the cutting mat, and wheel will help them grade (translation: blend two sizes) a pattern. They will use technology skills when I introduce them to the world of

PDF patterns and using adobe layers to print only the size they need. I am super excited about this project because I hope this passion will help grow my students' social awareness skills and confidence when they wear their clothing on campus, and may even spark a future career in costume design or engineering. Because of how creative and artistic my students are, I think they are going to come up with some amazing projects. This is part 2 of a project and the additional materials will really help my students get their sewing club off to great start.

In Their Own Words

Our project idea is creating a club at our high school that is dedicated to sewing. We would teach people how to sew and be better seamstresses ourselves with the help of our teacher. We would promote self-expression through something that everyone has, clothes! ~Camille

I really think this club will benefit students because it will be something they could look forward to in school and it will make some students happy by putting them in the right mindset and give them something to do. ~Brookyln

The other leaders and I will lead with the teacher in teaching and doing lessons and tell them the history of sewing and do a lot of projects. ~Brooklyn

We would start by meeting twice a week and master sewing with just my club partners. We would create a lesson plan, come up with sewing ideas and buy patterns and fabric with your help to create our own clothes. Our first project would be getting comfortable with sewing and the process, but then throughout the year we would eventually donate to hospitals or a woman's shelter and make necessities like socks, scarfs, hats, or stuffed animals. ~ Camille

This project is important to me because sewing is an old art form, and I feel like my generation doesn't use it anymore. So creating a club just about sewing and creating clothes is fun and exciting, and I think will create a better environment and better creative expression at school and life. ~Camille

This project is important to me because I want to learn how to sew better and how it is important to our community is because we can make things to donate to the community. ~Karlene
