My Students
Help us save precious learning time! Listening to stories is a wonderful way for young readers to build fluency. However, cords connected to our center's headphones tangle easily. Over time, headphones with cords develop shorts that cause them not to work. Precious learning time is then lost.
My kindergarten students are five and six years old who love learning to read.
Our school is located in a small rural town with high poverty. My class has several students that are English Language Learners. All my students enjoy the listening center. They love being able to hear a story while following along in the text as it is read on CD.
My Project
During our reading block, students are either working with me or they are in independent work stations. The listening center is an independent work station in our room. At the beginning of the year, I model how to operate the listening center to each group of students. My students are very successful at pressing buttons, taking care of the books and following the print. However, the area that causes stress for both the students and me are the cords on the headphones. When they become tangled or develop a short, the story must be paused at the listening center and I need to leave my reading group to assist in untangling or replacing the headphones. There have been times where I do not have a replacement and a student cannot finish listening to the story. Wireless headphones with batteries will eliminate the lost instructional time due to cords tangling or developing a short.
Your support of this project will be giving my classroom the gift of more instructional time with less stress for both my students and me.
The students will be able to listen to fluently read stories without interruption.
