My students need access to a copier for completing college applications and scholarships, copying classroom notes from other students and teachers, and learning basic office equipment usage.
Our school is a small, rural, economically distressed high school, serving a population of students, of which 50% or more receive free or reduced breakfasts and lunches. My classroom serves special education students in grades 9-12 with varying levels of ability ranging between a first grade- equivalent to a post-high school level.
One of the obstacles my students face in a classroom is taking notes. Perception problems make it difficult to transfer notes from the board to their notebooks. Another obstacle they face is economic. Colleges and scholarship committees require special needs students to submit huge amounts of paperwork. My students cannot afford to make the multiple copies required.
My students need cost-free access to a copier. They will be able to have a copy of classroom notes that will help them to improve their grades. A copier will also allow them to submit applications for acceptance to college and apply for scholarships. An added bonus, the lower functioning students will be able to learn the use of a basic piece of office technology that in turn may help them secure a job!
