My Students
My students will be the youngest learners in a pre-k to fifth grade school in a high-need neighborhood of Brooklyn. About 90% of the students in our school receive free lunch. My new students will be arriving to school, three or four years old. For most of them, September will be their first school experience. This will be a time of significant transition for them as they adjust to a new environment. I cannot wait to meet my new class of students, and provide for them a safe, fun, and loving first learning experience.
My Project
My students each need a teddy bear, which they will be able to use as a safe object to comfort them during their new school experience. During pre-k, social-emotional development is one of the most important domains for learning.
Students learn about different emotions, and how to cope with them in safe ways during pre-k.
They also learn to communicate how they feel and to get along with others. This learning will help them get ready for the rest of elementary school and help them throughout their lives. Teddy bears in the classroom will enhance social emotional learning by providing comfort and a way to practice coping strategies for when they are upset, such as when they miss their parents or when stressful events happen in their lives. They might cuddle with the bear or talk to the bear, or even act out something that is bothering them using the bear.
Each child needs their own special bear, that he or she will name. The bears will help provide a calm and safe first school experience for my wonderful students. Please help make a difference in my students' lives by bringing teddy bears my classroom.
