This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Resilience. My students have shown me time and time again that they are resilient. So many of them have experienced huge losses, from losing a family member to being evicted from their home, their parents losing their jobs, still my students go to school with a smile on their face sometimes with tears streaming down their faces. Yet, they still, show up!
Resilient kids need support too!
I've realized that just because they still smile through their pain that it does not mean they're okay, rather it means they need support and with the support, they will succeed. I am so proud of my school community and the resiliency my students demonstrate. I also want to equip them with more comfort and care so that they can continue to thrive and one day become successful adults.
My Project
Often students come to see me when they are experiencing some sort of trauma. They enjoy sharing their feelings and learning strategies to feel better. These books will allow me to teach coping skills in a way that is easier understood by my students as they will see images and also may recognize that a character feels just as they do.
Normalizing their feelings is crucial.
When they can see a story that matches how they are feeling, they can be seen, heard, and understood on a deeper level. I hope to use these books individually and in a group to provide support for our students who have been through so much, while also giving them life skills they can use later on in life.
