My Project
Hilo, Hawai'i can be hot and humid. With no AC, our classroom is challenging to cool down. Our room sits on the first floor between a hill and another building, so we miss out on the natural breeze. We were very fortunate to have received two tower fans through our previous DonorsChoose project. Those fans are so wonderful that we would like to get two more. This way we will be able to cool the students off from each side. I've noticed that when the weather is hot and sticky my students tend to be fussier and more active than usual. I am hoping that if I am able to fulfill our physical need to cool off, then we will be able to focus on our academics.
Our project, "Cool Our School," will provide my students with two oscillating tower fans, a reading center, a book set about making "good" choices, magnetic student white boards, timers, two volleyballs, and more.
Fans help to circulate the air. The white boards have a range of uses. In math, we will work on equations, showing our work, quick images, writing spelling words, and much more. The reading center will be used as an intervention for struggling readers. The book set will be used for social emotional learning to teach the students about how our choices affect our day. We have the "power to choose." The timers will help with transitions, assessments, and small groups. The volleyballs will provide my students with opportunities to build verbal and nonverbal communication skills and foster relationships between students. The stickers will be used a positive reinforcement.
