My Students

My students are a lovable set of kids who enjoy life! Many come from difficult situations and a tough neighborhood where there are a lot of factors pulling them in every direction to do the wrong thing.

When they come to school, it is often difficult for them to switch into learning mode without the right tools and materials.

As a school, we hope to help our students by giving them an excellent foundation for their further education. My students hold high hopes for their futures, and I hope to equip them to hold themselves to high expectations for their life.

My Project

Truly diving in and analyzing a text can be very daunting for many students, especially those who don't see reading as the most fun thing they could be doing with their day. I want to make sure this daunting task becomes manageable, successful and even (dare I say) fun for the kiddos in my classroom!

History is a broad subject that can leave students exhilarated or snoozing, helping them use their ELA reading skills and helping them learn to close read makes the challenge more like a mystery than a lecture.

I love to get students reading, even when the text seems like a mountain to climb - close reading strategies help students to gather the courage to face that mountain boldly.

In this project, I am asking for highlighters and pens to get students interacting with their text on an analytical level. The rulers will help students do the interacting and help them focus on certain areas of text. The paper allows me to ensure that all students have individual copies of text so that every student can be successful. Finally, the two texts that are provided are books that will help guide me and the students through the close reading process and will have many examples and activities for the students to use and learn from.
