My students need seating for our literacy activities, basic printing supplies, a fan so we can get some ventilation, and whiteboard materials.

My Students
Located in New York City, the majority of our students at our elementary school are from low income/poverty level socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of our students qualify for free school lunch and many receive support from other community programs. We also have a high rate of students who come from various cultures, including Haitian Creole, Spanish, and Arabic speaking households, and present at school as English language learners.
Most of my students are enrolled in substantially separate special education classrooms.
I have students with a broad range of disabilities ranging from non-verbal, delayed language, severe articulation disorders, and immature social skills. They carry various diagnoses such as developmental delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cleft Palate, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbances, Attention Deficit Disorders, cognitive impairments, language based difficulties and stuttering disorders.
My Project
Currently, about 11,000 classrooms across NYC do not have air conditioning, leaving kids and teachers sweating. Temperatures in uncooled classrooms can reach 100 degrees during the hot months from May-September. My 4th floor classroom is unfortunately included in this data. Due to budget cuts, we do not have working printers or photocopiers for our students to create with.
Additionally, we do not have a working blackboard for the students to display or share their work with their peers.
It is very difficult for students to focus and learn when their learning environment is sweltering. It is also very difficult for students to have a love for learning when the basic necessities are lacking and the environment is uncomfortable. I want my students to have a love for learning.
I am requesting a fan in order to provide some relief to my students to enable them to partake in therapy sessions when the heat is sweltering. I am also requesting bean bag chairs as alternate seating for our literacy activities. When comfortable, they are more likely to engage in the reading process. The beanbag seating will provide a casual alternative to explore the world of books. This will also help to facilitate conversations, discussions, and questioning skills among my students.
In addition, we are lacking basic classroom supplies in order to print and write on the board. The whiteboard paper can be hung on the wall and students can then come up to the board to share and contribute during therapy sessions. Printer and ink will give us access to print manipulatives
