My students need pots, pans, and cooking trays in order to get closer to completing our classroom 'kitchen'.

My Students
I am the teacher of 25 energetic and remarkable 5th-grade students in a city with the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in our country! Each morning my students walk through the door and are greeted with new opportunities to learn and be successful. My students are very creative and, as their teacher, I do my best to foster their learning and provide opportunities to grow as individuals.
Some of the best and most unique learning experiences do not come from a book.
My Project
I would like to provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities to my students with the requested pots, pans, and baking trays. These essential cooking items will be a great addition to the materials we've already received for our classroom 'kitchen'. Using baking and cooking as a learning experience will be beneficial in numerous ways. Students will be able to learn about fractions and ratios while baking and cooking. This will give them the opportunity to apply their math skills to something important and relevant in their lives. Students would also be working cooperatively with their cooking team to utilize reading and cooperation skills in order to follow recipes and provide a meal or a snack to their classmates. Cooking in class will also be a fun and unique way to learn about each other's culture. Students will be invited to bring a favorite recipe unique to their culture or family tradition. With my assistance, students will work with their team to prepare these dishes for their classmates.
Students will be learning relevant life skills in a safe, structured, and supervised classroom environment.
Each of my students comes from his or her own unique situation and home life. We have an ethnically and economically diverse classroom full of eager learners and hard workers. Some of my students have opportunities at home to bake and cook with their families, however, some of my students do not have opportunities to learn these valuable life skills. Applying academics throughout the curriculum to an important and relevant life skill, such as cooking, would be a valuable and unique opportunity for my students. With the help of DonorsChoose.org, this opportunity is a possibility.
