My Students
Someone wrote that "Education begins the moment we see children as innately wise and capable beings. Only then can we play along in their world." Filled with so much diversity, I see our student's unique personalities dominate their learning experiences and other interactions in the classroom. Their diversity stems from race, learning abilities, physical and mental abilities, race, language acquisition and economics among others. As an ICT classroom and a kindergarten classroom the diversity of their learning abilities is pronounced.
Many times the world places an emphasis on our children's importance for the future; unintentionally dimming their value, purpose and contributions to the 'now'.
My students are energetic. Every day this energy mingles with their diversity resulting in continuous remarkable, breathtaking moments of opportunity. It is hard not to notice how powerful they are in the 'now' or how they each add value and beauty to the present world around them. I get lost at times, wallowing in how uniquely intelligent they each are, but more on how they reflect that intelligence.
My Project
In a highly differentiated ICT classroom it is important to be creative with learning time. There are lots of gaps in learning and in teaching time and not enough teachers to address all aspects of it. The materials will be used to create learning bins from which students can strengthen the areas in which they are struggling, without having a teacher immediately present. This allows the teachers (two) to give greater individual attention to students. While some students are still working or getting individual and small group attention, those who are finished with an activity can work on a skill they need to master by using one of the bins to work independently or in a small group.
The term "Cool It Down" is used because the manipulatives in the bins cater for hands-on learning and they are different from what we normally use.
It also caters to different learning styles. This creates a fun and light energy in a long rigorous day. This is important for children. The more opportunities they can get that makes learning enjoyable and attainable is awesome. There is also another reason. The bins which will be created are a huge tool in classroom management. Our kids are energetic and eager to learn. Not having them engaged fully when there are gaps can be chaotic. Addressing their energy and their desire to learn at the same time maintains a calm and cool atmosphere within the classroom.
