My students need tablets and protective covers, to help them access reading and math learning websites. They will also be able to read electronic books that help them learn to read better.
The name of our classroom is the Cool Cats. We stay cool and we try not to let anything stand in the way of our goal. Currently we have a limited computer time of fifty minutes one day a week. I have 22 students. We are in need of more computer time to help use with reading and assessment.
Our school is in a community where 100% of my students receive a free lunch.
In addition, I have to pay for our snack. My students had a substitute for the first three months of the school year, which has caused them to fall behind academically. In addition, more than half of my students had never be in a learning environment before.
My students are eager about learning, and they love to use electronics. I want them to know and understand electronics can be used for more than just playing video games. At this time we have three computers in our room, my computer which runs really slow, and two student computers where one works and the other one does not. Since we only have two working computers technology access is limited, and I am unable to fully use my listening center to help students' reading develop.
My Project
My plan is to have students attend an English language arts center and a math center every day. Their are five to six students in each group. Students will go from having about two minutes of computer time a week to having forty minutes of computer time each week. Students will go to learning websites like ABCYa and Starfall. These are reading and math websites. Students will also be able to listen to our weekly books on the tablets for review purposes. Tablets in our classroom will also help students reach Star assessment goals and our classroom goal of having students reading before leaving kindergarten.
Students are excited about learning.
My project will make a difference because it will give my students a chance to access and understand computers and tablets individually, and not in a large group setting where they may only touch a computer once a week for about two minutes.
