Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am a teacher in an inner city school where most of our kids are ELL including their parents or legal guardians. Since we are a Title I school, we have limited resources.

The group of kids that I work with have sensory problems.

They have a hard time controlling how they feel. They need a "safe place" which is an area where they can just go to calm themselves down. A perfect example would be: A calming tent with dimming lights and sensory equipment that will alter their behaviors.

My Project

My students have difficulties with sensory and expressing their frustrations. Having a safe place will help them to calm down every time they show inappropriate behaviors.

Due to the fact that my students can't express how they are feeling, they tend to be frustrated and need help to control their feelings.

The earmuffs will isolate any unwanted noise so they can focus on the different color changes of the sensory lamp. The divider will serve as a barrier between the other students and the safe place area. So they will not be disturbed while they are trying to calm themselves down.
