My 7th graders range in ability and income level from 2nd grade and low income to college level readers who vacation in Dubai. Because of this diversity of interests and ability, I am passionate about engaging students though choice reading instead of assigned novels as I work to meet state standards in Language Arts. I currently have a lot of high level books. So, my focus with this request is primarily students who may be struggling with reading. These students are often socially adept and reluctant to read books that look young or easy. For this reason, I have taken great care to select books that are easily accessible to struggling readers, but also that look "cool" and like middle school books.
All books on this list were requested or recommended by 7th graders in my class today.
Because I am good at creating relationships with kids and learning their likes and dislikes, they trust me and are willing to try books I recommend and help me recommend books to others. Together, we create a culture of reading in the classroom community.
I am passionate about choice reading because it fosters a sense of autonomy and ownership over student's learning journey. When students are allowed to select books that pique their personal interests and cater to their reading levels, they become more engaged and motivated readers. This intrinsic motivation can be a powerful catalyst for their growth as it encourages them to read more frequently and consistently, allowing students to expand their vocabulary and comprehension skills organically. This diversified reading experience contributes to a more well-rounded education and prepares students for the challenges of higher-grade levels where reading complexity continues to increase.
