My students need fans and an air conditioner so they can keep learning during the hottest days. In the fall, our classroom reached temperatures greater than 95 degrees!

My Students
My school is a Title I school in Coney Island, Brooklyn, with nearly all of the students qualifying for free lunch. To most people, Coney Island is a place full of exciting vacation memories, but when the tourists are gone the neighborhood changes drastically. In real life, Coney Island is a poverty-stricken community. The poverty level became even more extreme in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Many of our students lost everything, and our school was heavily damaged as well. While we are recovering, it's a slow process and our students can use every extra push. In my vision, school should be an escape for the students from the usual poverty and gang violence.
It is one of my goals as a science teacher to prepare my students for a world with opportunities and open doors, where they need to be scientifically and technologically literate.
My science lab should be full of the same high tech equipment and lab materials available to students in "wealthy" public schools so that my students truly do have the same opportunities. Most of the equipment in my lab is old and I have very limited access to new technology and data collection tools.
My Project
Did you know that there are still public schools in NYC that do not have air conditioning? While classes continue until the end of June, our science lab has no air conditioning. Students try their hardest to stay on task but it can get pretty miserable.
During the Fall, our classroom temperatures exceeded 95 degrees on the hottest days.
It is already hot and humid and we still have nearly two entire months of learning to go. We desperately need air conditioners and fans to ensure that our scholars will spend the rest of the school year in a cool environment that is conducive to learning.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
